WASHINGTON, D.C. – Liberty Counsel Action joins 74 U.S. legislators urging to end the use the body parts of aborted babies for government research by Health and Human Services (HHS). The National Institutes of Health (NIH), an organization within HHS, estimates it is spending $103 million taxpayer dollars purchasing and experimenting on "Human Fetal Tissue" just in fiscal year 2018. This is in line with the previous year’s spending.

The University of California at San Francisco used aborted babies' intestines in a yearlong experiment to create two types of “humanized mice” in a contract that is up for renewal tomorrow, December 5, 2018. They had a $13 million dollar contract with NIH and received $9 million dollars for it. This experiment used healthy children whose mothers chose to abort between 18-24 weeks. However, one girl named Lyla who was born at 21 weeks and four days, is now a perfectly healthy four-year-old. This means about half of the age range used for these experiments were on children old enough who, if given the opportunity, may have lived a healthy life outside the womb!

"This is barbaric," said Mat Staver, Chairman of Liberty Counsel Action. "Every human life is precious and should not be sacrificed to be experimented on. The United States government needs to get out of the business of trying to profit off of aborted baby body parts," said Staver.

The letter states, "Exploiting even one unborn child in this way is repulsive and should stop, regardless of the outcome hoped for by researchers. However, not only is research with abortion fetal tissue unethical and wrong, it is ineffective. Fetal tissue has not produced a single clinical treatment, despite being used in clinical research since the 1920s."
