When President Trump gave notice to pull out of the World Health Organization (WHO), he only temporarily wounded it. The WHO could survive his term. Other donors will fill the funding gap. And the next president could put America right back in the clutches of the WHO. Meanwhile, the WHO wields a formidable power that will reach into every American community — even after we pull out.
A second concern is that while signing the WHO executive order, President Trump left open a path to reenter the WHO, even during his presidency. His criticisms focused on the high cost of the WHO.
‘“They wanted us back so badly so we'll see what happens,” Trump said in the Oval Office, referring to the WHO. He was “perhaps hinting the US might return eventually,” the BBC recognized immediately. At the same time, the WHO wants reconciliation. Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said, “We are open to engaging in constructive dialogue to preserve and strengthen the historic relationship between WHO and the USA.” Tedros hopes “the new administration will reconsider it.”
We need to have Congress pass a law to permanently (1) defund the WHO, and (2) require 2/3 vote of the U.S. Senate for any proposed agreements with the WHO. We have a critical window to pass this legislation as part of the Budget Continuing Resolution (CR) in March — which only needs a majority vote to pass in the Senate.
Urge Congress to codify the defunding of the WHO and erect barriers to getting back in the WHO.
The WHO is desperate to regain its footing in the U.S. The WHO has issued a hiring freeze and travel restrictions to reduce its budget.
Globalism is a complex multifaceted problem. The WHO is just one organization reporting to the United Nations (U.N.). On Capitol Hill, Liberty Counsel Action’s staff is recommending forming a Congressional Select Subcommittee to review U.S. engagement in each aspect of the U.N., including the WHO, to determine its extent, effectiveness or lack thereof, and the best path forward. This would include:
Outlining the current U.S. obligations in both binding and nonbinding agreements, conventions, and treaties.
Listing current domestic policies referencing, influenced, or governed by the U.N. and the WHO.
The extent to which the U.N. promotes controversial policies counter to U.S. values and how the U.S. can change that narrative.
Exposing the actual amount of federal funding for the U.N.
This committee would issue specific policy recommendations for congressional action. Undoubtedly, there is an extensive list of foreign entanglements that are harming America and draining our nation of taxpayer dollars that could be better used domestically.
The U.S. House desperately needs to permanently stop funding the WHO. In addition, approval for treaties and agreements must return to a 2/3 vote of the Senate as the Constitution requires.
There is concern that Trump, or any future president, would be open to renegotiating and putting America back into the WHO. There is nothing good about the WHO. This is our best shot to permanently defund the WHO and to require 2/3 vote of the Senate for any WHO or U.N. agreement.
Under the guise of “public health,” the WHO would have enormous authority to control the world and force abortion, LGBTQ, open borders, lockdowns, rationing of health care, and much more. Even if America has pulled out of the WHO, if the WHO controls travel, it can still mandate vaccine passports for anyone entering or leaving the remaining 193 nations that are a part of the WHO. It can also control all the medical supplies, manufacturing, and even the supply chain of raw materials necessary for making medical supplies.
It can control all of this AFTER we have exited the WHO! The situation is dynamic and constantly changing. Our team is meeting with members of Congress, and we know that they want, and need, to hear from you directly.
