On July 4, the celebration of freedom comes with a price

In just two days, Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding is scheduled to return after a one-year moratorium.

On July 4 — the 250th anniversary of American independence — our nation may once again begin sending federal Medicaid dollars to America’s largest abortion and trans business.

The Republican-led Senate had an opportunity to stop it through budget reconciliation.

But thus far, they failed to have the absolute resolve to defund abortion.

Last year, we fought for a 10-year ban on funding for Planned Parenthood and other large abortion providers. President Trump and congressional Republicans enacted a one-year prohibition on federal Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood and certain other abortion providers.

It was not permanent.

The clock began ticking the moment President Trump signed an earlier bill last year. Sen. Josh Hawley offered an amendment to extend this spending prohibition but, by a narrow margin, the Senate failed to get it across the finish line.

However, there is still a path forward.

Republicans could use budget reconciliation to finish what we started. Instead, they joined Democrats and did nothing to stop this money flowing back to Planned Parenthood and others in 48 hours.

Under Republican leadership, the Senate has effectively walked away from the unborn children whose lives are threatened every day inside Planned Parenthood facilities.

They knew the deadline. They knew what would happen.

They knew hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars could begin flowing back to the abortion industry.

And still, the Senate failed to act.

Congress must hear from you. They will interpret silence as consent.

Planned Parenthood does not need or deserve another penny. In its latest annual report, Planned Parenthood disclosed that it received 832 million dollars in government health services reimbursements and grants.

We should never be forced to subsidize an organization that takes the lives of unborn children. Last year’s temporary prohibition proved that Congress can accomplish this task. Now Congress must finish the job.
