LCA testimony urges EPA to test for abortion drug in our water

Hundreds of thousands of abortion pills are being pumped into our water supply, and a new peer-reviewed study shows they are entering our homes through our faucets.

Today, we are doing something about it.

Our team created a presentation with 60 pages of information and research that we are presenting as written and oral testimony today to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The EPA is deciding which drugs to monitor in America’s public water systems in the next national requirement testing cycle, known as the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6).

We are urging the EPA to add the abortion drug mifepristone and its three active metabolites to that list.

The federal government has never adequately investigated the impact of chemical abortions on our water supply. A new study shows this endocrine blocker is entering our drinking water. Is the abortion drug contributing to miscarriage, infertility in both genders, and other health problems? We need to know.

Fax Congress and demand the EPA act promptly and conduct a comprehensive study of the dangers of this abortion drug.

Mifepristone is the first drug used in the two-pill chemical abortion regimen. After a woman takes it, the drug forms three active metabolites that remain capable of blocking progesterone, a hormone essential to fertility and pregnancy.

Every year, approximately 700,000 chemical abortions occur in America. At 200 mg per pill, that means we have 140 million mg of mifepristone consumed every year!

Those chemicals are excreted from the body and passed into our wastewater systems. Women are instructed to do these abortions at home, where both the aborted child’s remains and related medical waste are flushed into public wastewater systems.

And with each passing day, this is likely to create a bigger problem as mifepristone and its metabolites accumulate in our water.

We do know that peer-reviewed research has detected mifepristone in drinking water in U.S. cities. Researchers have also detected it in environmental waters in the United States and around the world.

As of now, the environmental consequences — both of the drug and of hundreds of thousands of aborted babies entering our water treatment system — have NEVER been comprehensively studied.

Animal studies provide additional reasons for concern. Researchers have reported decreased fertility and impaired embryo development in exposed sea urchins, sex reversal in female Nile tilapia, reduced reproductive success in female frogs, and masculinization in female puffer fish.

We MUST test for the presence of this drug in our drinking water and must stop this public health crisis!

Active metabolites from mifepristone act as “endocrine disruptors.” The EPA itself warns that endocrine-disrupting chemicals may interfere with reproduction and development and may contribute to developmental abnormalities, cancer, and disturbances of the immune and nervous systems.

Urge Congress and the EPA to fully study these problems and protect public health.

There is another problem. The EPA is monitoring the wrong drug.

The EPA is currently evaluating the second drug (misoprostol). The EPA has placed misoprostol on the Human Health Benchmarks for Pharmaceuticals list, but at the same time, it is overlooking mifepristone.

That makes little scientific sense. Misoprostol leaves the body quickly. In about half an hour, half of it is gone, and what is excreted is mostly inactive and likely unable to cause significant impact.

However, what the EPA is NOT monitoring is mifepristone. That drug stays in the body much longer. After more than 30 hours, half of it remains. And when the body breaks it down, it becomes other chemicals that are still able to block progesterone — a vital fertility hormone.

That means mifepristone and its active chemicals have more time to enter wastewater. If the EPA wants to know which drugs may be getting into our drinking water, it must test for mifepristone.
