The battle for the ballot is red hot

The Senate returns to Washington on Monday, September 14, and senators will walk straight into a fight Congress can no longer pretend belongs to somebody else.

Right now, not one but TWO major Trump administration election-security initiatives are tangled up in court and at risk of being blocked. It is more urgent than ever for the Senate to act NOW!

There is no guarantee that election integrity will prevail in the courts. One Trump initiative in court involves mail-in ballots; the other involves citizenship verification.

Both cases have reached the U.S. Supreme Court ... the same Court that declined to take up several post-2020 election challenges. USPS v. California responses were due Wednesday, and DHS v. League of Women Voters responses will be due Tuesday.

What happens in the next few days could massively shift the rules governing ballots and voter eligibility — all just weeks before Election Day.

The courts cannot be our only line of defense. That’s why I’m asking you now to demand that Congress pass clear statutory safeguards for mail ballots and citizenship verification before another critical election cycle slips away under a cloud of doubt.

Under President Trump’s executive order, the Postal Service adopted new requirements for transporting federal ballots through the mail. Implementing these requirements dramatically expands accountability and traceability for millions of ballots moving through the mail.

These are exactly the steps that must be taken to tighten our system so that only American citizens receive ballots in our election process.

But a court can block executive orders overnight. Only clear federal statutes can lock in lasting protections for our ballots. This is exactly why Congress must act.

Tell your senators to stop hiding behind lawsuits and pass real election-security legislation now. The Senate is back Monday. Make them hear your voice. Send as many urgent faxes as possible today.

There is more. Another court blocked an election-integrity initiative — this one involving citizenship verification.

The Department of Homeland Security expanded a federal database so that states could conduct large-scale citizenship-verification checks using federal records and Social Security information.

A federal judge blocked those changes, too. Apparently, it's too much to be able to inquire whether a voter is a citizen or not.

The administration is now asking the Supreme Court to restore access to this system while litigation continues. Think about what both of these cases mean.

In one courthouse, the federal government is being told it cannot impose new safeguards on ballots traveling through the mail.

In another courthouse, it is being told it cannot use an expanded federal system to help states verify citizenship in the manner the administration proposed.
